When Life Takes a Toll, Your Skin Feels It Too
Why stressed, depleted, and reactive skin needs a little more understanding and a lot less overwhelm.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered what happened to your skin?
The moisturizer you've used for years suddenly isn't enough. Your face feels tight, itchy, or irritated. Your scalp is acting up, your hair seems thinner, and products you once loved aren't agreeing with you anymore.
You haven't necessarily changed anything about your routine. So what changed?
Maybe your hormones. Maybe your health. Maybe you've been carrying more stress than anyone realizes. Or perhaps life has simply been life, and your body is feeling every bit of it.
Here's something I wish more people understood. Your skin doesn't exist separately from the rest of you. And sometimes, what shows up on the surface has very little to do with what you're putting on it.
Your Skin Has Been Paying Attention
Your skin and scalp are constantly responding to what's happening inside your body and in the world around you.
Stress, hormonal fluctuations, autoimmune conditions, illness, and even prolonged grief can influence how your skin functions. Changes in inflammation, hormone levels, and the skin's ability to retain moisture can leave it feeling dry, fragile, itchy, or unusually reactive.
Your hair and scalp can respond, too. I know this personally. During one of the most difficult seasons of my life, grief and an autoimmune condition were taking a toll on me in ways I didn't yet understand. My scalp became unbearably itchy. I scratched the same spot repeatedly, eventually losing hair and developing scar tissue.
At the time, I wasn't thinking about skin barriers, hormones, or inflammation. I just wanted the itching to stop. That experience eventually led me to create 826 & Co. It also taught me something that continues to shape how I formulate today.
Sometimes your skin isn't asking you to do more. It's asking you to pay attention.
When Your Body Has More Pressing Concerns
Our bodies are remarkably good at responding to challenges. But that doesn't mean the effects of those challenges go unnoticed.
During periods of prolonged stress, the body's stress response can interfere with normal skin barrier function, moisture retention, and recovery. Hormonal changes can affect collagen production, oil production, and hydration. Certain autoimmune and thyroid conditions can contribute to dryness, sensitivity, and changes in hair growth.
The result can be skin that suddenly seems to have a mind of its own. That rich cream you loved last year may no longer feel nourishing enough. Your usual exfoliant might leave your face irritated. Your scalp may feel tender or dry, even though you're washing and conditioning it exactly as you always have.
It's tempting to assume your products have stopped working. But sometimes, the skin you're caring for today simply has different needs than the skin you had six months ago. And there's nothing wrong with adjusting how you care for it.
Of course, persistent or unexplained changes deserve a conversation with your dermatologist or healthcare provider. Skincare can support the surface, but it cannot diagnose or correct an underlying medical condition.
Your Skin Doesn't Need Another Chore List
Have you noticed how quickly skincare advice turns into a shopping list?
A cleanser, toner, exfoliant, essence, three serums, moisturizer, facial oil, and something extra for whatever new concern appeared this morning. Before long, taking care of your skin feels like another job.
And if you're already dealing with fatigue, stress, or a body that doesn't always cooperate, the last thing you need is another complicated routine to keep up with. I'm not against multiple products. I'm against the idea that more automatically means better.
There are times when a thoughtful combination of products makes perfect sense. But when your skin is feeling especially reactive or depleted, introducing too many products or using aggressive treatments can make matters worse.
Sometimes a gentle cleanse, targeted hydration, and a nourishing moisturizer are exactly what your skin needs. Not because simple skincare is somehow more virtuous, but because every product should have a purpose. You should know why you're using it, what it contributes, and how it fits into caring for the skin you have right now. And if your routine takes three minutes instead of thirty, that's perfectly fine.
Self-Care Should Feel Like Care
This is where I believe skincare can offer something beyond the ingredients in the bottle.
Think about the difference between rushing through your routine because you have to and taking a few intentional moments because you want to.
The warm water against your face. A gentle cleanser moving across your skin. The smooth glide of a facial oil as you massage it into your neck. A familiar botanical aroma that makes you linger just a little longer. None of those things will solve the problems waiting for you tomorrow. But for a few minutes, you're doing something kind for yourself. And I don't think we should underestimate the value of that.
Scent has a close connection to the parts of the brain involved in memory and emotion. Touch can be comforting, and familiar rituals can offer a welcome sense of steadiness when other parts of life feel unpredictable.
That's one reason I care so much about how our products feel. I love beautiful textures. I love the way a thoughtfully blended botanical aroma can change the experience of applying a product. I love a facial oil that invites you to slow down instead of rushing to the next step.
Not every formula needs an aroma. In fact, some skin does better without one. But when I do incorporate essential oils, I use them thoughtfully, at skin-respecting levels, because the experience matters to me just as much as the purpose behind the ingredients.
I don't believe you should have to choose between skincare that performs and skincare that feels wonderful to use.
You deserve both.
Meeting Your Skin Where It Is
When I started formulating, I wasn't trying to create another beauty brand. I was trying to find some comfort for my own scalp. Over time, that purpose grew. Today, 826 & Co. creates plant-powered skincare and scalp care for people navigating dryness, reactivity, hormonal changes, and all the other ways life can show up on the skin.
Our formulas bring together clinically studied ingredients, advanced ingredient technologies, and purposeful botanicals. The goal isn't to overwhelm the skin with everything imaginable. It's to choose ingredients that work well together and serve a meaningful purpose.
Some help attract and retain moisture. Others support the skin's protective barrier, nourish depleted skin, or improve the appearance of tone and texture. And because your scalp is skin too, it deserves that same level of attention.
We don't promise that a serum can reverse the effects of chronic stress or that a moisturizer can fix what is happening inside your body. What we can do is create thoughtful products that support your skin while you navigate those changes. Products that feel good in your hands and on your skin. Products that make caring for yourself something to look forward to. Because when life is already asking so much of you, skincare shouldn't be another source of stress.
A Little Grace for the Skin You're In
I want to leave you with something. Your skin is going to change. It will change with the seasons, with your hormones, with your health, and with age. Sometimes it will change during chapters of life you never imagined having to navigate. That doesn't mean you've failed at taking care of it. It means you're human.
Pay attention to what your skin is telling you. Give it the moisture, nourishment, and protection it needs. Get medical guidance when something doesn't seem right. And when you reach for your skincare tonight, maybe give yourself permission to enjoy those few moments instead of rushing through them.
You don't have to turn every act of self-care into another task to accomplish. Some days, washing your face and putting on moisturizer is enough. Some days, you'll want the whole beautiful ritual. Both count.
Your skin has been carrying you through every chapter of your life. It deserves a little compassion along the way.
And so do you.
